The Supreme Federal Court (STF) has resumed hearings in the coup-attempt trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven allies regarding an alleged attempt to execute a coup d’état following the 2022 elections. Recent proceedings include scheduled testimony from ten defense witnesses for General Augusto Heleno, including former Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga and GSI executive secretary Carlos Penteado. In related legal developments, the STF has scheduled high-profile judgments for September. Between September 11 and 18, the First Chamber will review an appeal filed by the Public Defender's Office (DPU) regarding the sentence of former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro. The court will determine if public statements made by Bolsonaro should be treated as a confession to mitigate his four-year and two-month prison sentence for coercion during legal proceedings. Previous proceedings included testimony from former Air Force Commander Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior, who noted an “imminent risk of rupture” after the 2022 election. Regarding house arrest conditions, Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized a private tutor for Bolsonaro’s daughter, Laura, and granted visitation rights for Flávio and Carlos Bolsonaro to visit former aide Filipe Martins.
