Vale posts record Q2 output, shares rise, leadership shift
Overview
Vale’s second-quarter 2026 iron-ore production reached 84.3 million tonnes, the highest level since 2018, driven by record output from the S11D complex and the Sudeste system. Total sales rose 3% to 79.7 million tonnes. This performance lifted shares on the B3 and in New York, supported by resilient Chinese iron-ore imports, which rose 6.4% year-on-year in June despite a decline in China's crude steel output.
However, the company raised its C1 cash cost guidance for direct mining and shipping to US$22.50–US$23.50 per tonne, up from US$20.00–US$21.50, citing higher diesel prices and a stronger Brazilian real. Analysts estimated a potential EBITDA of US$3.7–3.8 billion for the quarter.
Governance remains a focal point. Shareholders elected Manuel Lino Silva de Sousa Oliveira (“Ollie”) as board chair with approximately 62.5% of the vote, backed by the pension fund Previ. The election followed the departure of Daniel Stieler and the dismissal of councilor Marcelo Gasparino for leaking confidential data.
The transition occurred amid political scrutiny. Members of Brazil's Congress raised concerns regarding potential state interference by the Lula administration, specifically naming Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira as a possible orchestrator of influence over the board. Lawmakers warned that a parliamentary inquiry (CPI) could be opened to examine these allegations of political influence on corporate governance.
