Brazilian agricultural sanitary void management

Overview

In Brazil, agricultural sanitary voids are being implemented for different crops to manage pest and disease risks.

In early September, soybean producers in Rondônia and Mato Grosso prepared for the 2026/2027 planting season as mandatory sanitary voids concluded. These periods, designed to reduce Asian soybean rust, ended on September 6 in Mato Grosso and were set to end on September 10 in Rondônia. Experts advised caution regarding planting due to potential weather uncertainties linked to El Niño.

Following this, the Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Defense (Indea-MT) scheduled a cotton sanitary void for the 2026/2027 harvest. Running from October through December, this measure aims to interrupt the life cycle of the cotton bollworm by prohibiting host plants during specific regional windows. This control is considered critical for Mato Grosso, which produces approximately 70% of Brazil’s cotton.
