Jogos da Juventude 2026 in Foz do Iguaçu
Overview
The Jogos da Juventude 2026 has commenced in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, bringing together approximately 5,000 student-athletes aged 13 to 17. Organized by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), the competition features 20 different sporting modalities and includes representatives from all 27 Brazilian federative units, alongside invited delegations from Argentina, Paraguay, and Japan.
To support the event, the COB appointed 21 sports ambassadors, including Olympic champions such as Arthur Zanetti, Beatriz Souza, and Bruninho, to provide mentorship and participate in ceremonies. Preparations have seen various states mobilizing, such as Paraíba providing travel support for its delegation and Bahia sending 216 members to the games.
As the national phase progresses, several states have begun securing medals. Bahia earned its first podium finishes with a silver medal in judo by Mateus Kauan and a bronze in triathlon by Levi Macedo. The Goiás delegation has also seen significant success, accumulating seven medals through the second block of competitions, including three silver and four bronze medals. Notable achievements for Goiás include two silver medals in cycling by Rute Carvalho and a silver in the 3,000-meter athletics race by Emanuel.
Economically, the event is projected to generate over R$ 40 million for local services. While the games celebrate regional diversity, the event has faced administrative challenges, such as the reported exclusion of Rondônia athlete Julia Freitas Vieira due to a registration error.
