Brazilian export diversification initiatives

Overview

Brazil is implementing strategic initiatives to diversify its export markets and reduce dependency on specific trading partners, particularly in response to trade challenges from the United States.

Initially, ApexBrasil and the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) renewed a partnership with a R$ 7.1 million investment to support the internationalization of approximately 400 companies. This program focuses on high-value sectors like the bioeconomy and sustainability, targeting markets across Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Following a reported US$ 2.9 billion decline in exports to the United States during the first half of 2026, ApexBrasil expanded its efforts by launching an Export Diversification Plan with R$ 210 million in allocated funds. This plan targets 35 strategic sectors affected by American tariffs. While Brazil has seen growth in trade with India and Europe, analysts suggest that US protectionism may represent a structural shift that could persist regardless of changes in Brazilian leadership.

Recent economic shifts in the United States have influenced Brazilian markets. As U.S. inflation data showed a cooling trend—with the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index rising 0.3% in August—the Brazilian real strengthened, with the dollar falling to R$ 5.17. Concurrently, the Ibovespa index rose by 1.37% in a single session, driven by domestic electoral sentiment and the U.S. economic data.

By September, the U.S. economy presented mixed signals, including private sector job growth of approximately 90,000 in September and a record public debt of $40 trillion. While August PCE data rose 0.2%, which was lower than the expected 0.3%, inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. These factors contributed to continued market volatility, with the Ibovespa rising over 5% in September as U.S. inflation data reduced pressure for further interest rate hikes.
