Brazilian Public School Math Olympiad

In late July 2026, Brazil’s Ministry of Education, through IMPA, announced a study‑exchange program in Zhejiang, China for the 26 gold‑medal winners of the 20th Brazilian Public School Math Olympiad (OBMEP). The program, running from 30 Nov to 13 Dec 2026, fully funds travel, accommodation, meals and activities and seeks to promote gender equity among participants.

A few days later, a broader overview of OBMEP was released. Launched in 2005 and run by IMPA with funding from the Ministries of Education and Science, the competition targets students from sixth grade through the final year of high school in both public and private schools. It features an objective first stage and a discursive second stage, with about 5 % of participants advancing. OBMEP also operates the Junior Scientific Initiation programme for medalists and offers a free online portal of curricular materials, aiming to improve basic‑education quality, stimulate interest in STEM, enhance teacher training, and foster collaboration among schools, universities and research institutes.
