Brazil's commodity trade surge with China
Entities: Brazil · China · Instituto Brasileiro de Mineração · Atlantic Nickel · Pará
Overview
In July 2026 Brazil recorded a historic trade surplus, posting a US$ 42.4 billion surplus for the January‑June period. The jump was driven largely by a surge in exports to China, which reached a record US$ 58.3 billion, accounting for roughly 32% of Brazil’s total exports. Key commodities included petroleum, soy, iron‑ore and beef, all hitting semi‑annual highs. The strong Chinese demand also coincided with China’s own export boom, especially in automobiles and green‑technology products, reinforcing the bilateral trade flow.
Later in July, Brazil’s mining sector reported an 8.2% rise in first‑half revenue to R$150.7 billion, reflecting higher international prices for gold and copper. While iron‑ore remained the dominant revenue source, its earnings fell slightly, but overall export volumes grew 2.4% to 196.2 million tonnes, valued at US$25.1 billion – a 24% increase. China continued to dominate as the primary destination, absorbing about 70% of exported tonnage.
The sector’s growth was underpinned by a sharp rise in gold revenue (up 44.2% to R$25.3 billion) and copper revenue (up 41% to R$20.6 billion), even as iron‑ore earnings slipped 3.1% to R$71.2 billion. Minas Gerais led state‑level earnings, and the industry announced US$76.9 billion of planned investment through 2030, including US$21.3 billion earmarked for critical minerals such as copper, nickel, lithium and rare earths. Projects highlighted include the Borborema gold mine in Rio Grande do Norte and an underground nickel operation at Atlantic Nickel’s Santa Rita mine in Bahia, signalling a diversification of Brazil’s export base while maintaining strong demand from China.
