Breast cancer awareness and statistics in Kosovo and Albania

Overview

In Kosovo, officials are utilizing Pink October to promote early breast cancer detection. Acting President Albulena Haxhiu and Minister of Health Arben Vitia have distributed oncology packages to patients, emphasizing that mammographies are provided free of charge. Data from 2025 shows that 53.4% of women with breast cancer in Kosovo were diagnosed in the first or second stages of the disease.

In Albania, the Institute of Public Health reported 829 new breast cancer cases in 2025. While the incidence rate has seen a slight annual increase of approximately 2.2%, mortality rates have declined from 18 deaths per 100,000 women in 2021 to 16 deaths per 100,000 women. Specialist Ediona Kola attributed the rise in recorded cases to an aging population, lifestyle changes, and improved awareness and screening programs. The increase is most notable in women over 50, while cases in women under 50 decreased by about 0.9%. Additionally, 19 cases were recorded in men during the past year.
