Breast cancer screening technology and efficacy
Overview
Medical discussions regarding breast cancer screening emphasize a personalized approach, utilizing various diagnostic tools such as digital mammography, ultrasound, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) based on individual risk factors like age and breast density.
Recent research from a large German study suggests that 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, may offer advantages over traditional 2D methods. The study, involving nearly 100,000 women, indicated a 29 percent relative reduction in invasive interval cancer cases during the first year of observation. However, researchers noted that the statistical difference between 3D and traditional mammography could not be clearly confirmed over a two-year period.
Experts have further highlighted the limitations of mammography for women with dense breast tissue, a condition affecting nearly half of women aged 40 to 74. In such cases, mammography sensitivity can drop from 85–90% in fatty tissue to as low as 60–70% because dense tissue and tumors both appear white on X-rays, which can obscure abnormalities.
To address these gaps, advanced imaging technologies are being utilized as complementary tools. MRI with contrast offers high diagnostic sensitivity and is particularly useful for women with extremely dense breasts or elevated genetic risks. While ultrasound may be recommended as an additional test, experts note that relying on ultrasound alone can miss up to 75% of breast cancers. Consequently, medical approaches are shifting toward individualized screening plans that consider age, density, family history, and overall risk profiles.
