In late July 2026 local and regional officials began formalising plans to repurpose Brindisi’s large petro‑chemical complex, highlighted by a cornerstone ceremony for an Eni‑backed gigafactory. A coordination committee chaired by the Industry Minister and the local prefect examined 35 investment proposals worth over €10 billion, aiming for more than 2,000 direct jobs in aerospace, renewable energy, circular‑economy, shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing. Trade unions pressed for immediate training programmes and the swift release of adjacent land. On 29 July 2026 the government announced an accelerated shutdown of Enel’s “Federico II” coal plant in Cerano, moving the closure well before the 2038 deadline. Ministers of Enterprises and the Environment, together with the prefect, said a ~~program~~ programme agreement for the site is nearly finalised, enabling the area to be released for new industrial projects. The same coordination committee presented the €10 bn proposal package, with eleven projects already advanced, securing €589 million and 512 new positions in renewable energy, water treatment, circular‑economy and aerospace. The union federation Uiltec called for immediate retraining for roughly 300 workers in the plant’s supply chain. ~~Authorities also discussed freeing~~ Subsequent meetings saw Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso press Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin to free land around the former coal plant and to release the energy regulator MASE ~~to make~~ for adjacent ~~parcels at Cerano and Civitavecchia available, extending~~ parcels. Funding for the broader Eni‑Versalis transformation in Priolo, Ragusa and Brindisi was raised from €2 billion to €2.5 billion. Urso also met with Lazio regional ~~re‑industrialisation effort.~~ vice‑president Roberta Angelilli to secure land in Civitavecchia for further reindustrialisation. The reconversion drive continues to link training programmes, land release, and the creation of a research centre, while multiple ministries coordinate to ensure a swift transition for displaced workers.
