British Columbia seasonal road safety campaigns

Overview

Authorities in British Columbia have launched seasonal safety campaigns to address hazards brought by autumn weather. The BC Association of Chiefs of Police initiated the ‘Drive Relative to Conditions’ campaign for October, focusing on the risks of reduced visibility caused by rain, fog, and shorter daylight hours.

Superintendent Lori Orstad of the BC Highway Patrol emphasized that drivers must adjust their speed to ensure they can stop within their visible distance, noting that posted speed limits are intended for ideal conditions. Under the BC Motor Vehicle Act, motorists may face a $196 fine for driving too quickly for prevailing conditions, even if they are traveling below the posted limit.

In conjunction with these efforts, officials are also promoting pedestrian safety during October. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear bright, reflective clothing and avoid distractions such as cellphones or headphones to maintain awareness of their surroundings.
