British Columbia wildfire prohibition rescissions

Overview

Wildfire prohibitions in British Columbia have begun to ease across different regions. In the Southeast Fire Centre, the B.C. Wildfire Service rescinded the Category 2 open fire prohibition, allowing for limited burning of material in small piles or stubble/grass fires following recent precipitation and improved weather forecasts. While Category 2 fires became permitted, Category 3 open fires remained prohibited in that region.

By late September, the Coastal Fire Centre announced the rescission of all remaining fire prohibitions, effective September 30. This lifted bans on Category 2 and Category 3 fires, which had previously applied to the coast with the exception of Haida Gwaii. The lifting of these restrictions permits activities such as the use of fireworks, burn barrels, and controlled air incinerators, though B.C. Wildfire Service regulations still apply to Crown land and specific protected areas.

Further rescissions are scheduled for the Kamloops Fire Centre, where Category 2 and 3 open fire prohibitions are set to be lifted starting October 2, 2026, at 12 p.m. PT. Category 2 fires involve burning material in one or two piles not exceeding two metres in height and three metres in width, or stubble/grass up to 0.2 hectares, while Category 3 fires involve larger piles, more concurrent piles, windrows, or larger areas of stubble/grass.
