Brooklyn Nets organizational development and community focus
Overview
The Brooklyn Nets are preparing for the 2026-27 season with a strategic emphasis on roster continuity and the development of a young core. Following the acquisition of Julius Randle and the drafting of Mikel Brown Jr., the team aims to build on existing chemistry to pursue a postseason or play-in berth.
Head coach Jordi Fernandez has expressed optimism regarding the development of the team’s young talent, referred to as the ‘Flatbush Five.’ He has emphasized that providing rookies, such as Egor Demin and Nolan Traore, with high volumes of competitive minutes is a vital component of growth following a 20-62 season.
To engage the local community, the franchise has expanded its ‘Nets Unite’ initiative. The 2026-27 schedule for these themed nights includes AAPI Night, Noche Latina, Pride Night, Black History Month, Chinese New Year, Caribbean Carnival, HBCU Homecoming, and Women’s Impact. These events will feature collaborations with local artists, small businesses, and community organizations.
Ahead of the season, the team hosted ‘Nets Fest’ at the Major Owens Community Center in Crown Heights. The event included basketball clinics and Q&A sessions featuring current players like Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Demin, alongside franchise legends Kenyon Martin, Buck Williams, and Albert King. The Nets are scheduled to begin preseason play against the Charlotte Hornets on October 6, with their regular-season home opener at Barclays Center set for October 21.
