Brown bear vehicle attacks in Hokkaido

Overview

In late September 2026, a woman driving in the mountainous Bifuka Town area of Hokkaido, Japan, was attacked by a large brown bear. The incident occurred on the Bifuka-Omu Line when the driver stopped her vehicle to allow two bears, believed to be a mother and her offspring, to cross the road.

Dashcam footage showed a bear approximately 1.5 meters long charging the car and striking the hood. The impact caused significant damage, including deep dents, a 10-centimeter scratch, and a hole in the metal. While the driver remained inside the locked vehicle and escaped injury, she reported feeling intense panic as the car shook from the animal’s strikes.

Following the encounter, the driver drove the damaged vehicle to a nearby police station. Local authorities noted that sightings of mother-and-cub pairs have been frequent in the Niyuibu region this year, and police have advised motorists to remain inside locked vehicles during wildlife encounters and to monitor local activity reports.
