Brunei royal title revocation

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei has revoked the royal title of his daughter-in-law, Pengiran Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah, the wife of Prince ‘Abdul Malik. The decision was announced via a televised broadcast by the Acting Grand Chamberlain and later confirmed by the Treasurer General’s Office following a royal decree.

The revocation of the title ‘Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri’ was reportedly due to conduct deemed inappropriate for a member of the royal family. Such behavior was judged to have shown a lack of respect toward the Sultan, the Queen, and the royal family, thereby tarnishing the reputation and honor of the Brunei monarchy.

Recent updates from the Office of the Grand Chamberlain indicate that the Sultan has also expelled Pengiran Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah from the Royal Household. The palace stated her actions were ‘unbecoming of a spouse of a member of the Royal Family’ and demonstrated a ‘lack of respect’ toward the Sultan. While the specific nature of the behavior remains undisclosed, some reports have noted rumors of a potential divorce.

While the title has been withdrawn in previous instances following divorces within the royal family, the marital status of Prince ‘Abdul Malik and Pengiran Raabi’atul ‘Adawiyyah remains officially unchanged. The couple has four children, all of whom retain their royal titles despite their mother’s expulsion. Prince ‘Abdul Malik is the youngest son of the Sultan and Queen Saleha and holds fourth position in the line of succession.
