Bukova kosa coal mine environmental dispute

Coal mining operations at the Bukova kosa site near Prijedor have faced allegations of continuing despite official bans and inspectorate prohibitions. The Center for Environmental Issues reported that machinery remained active on-site, raising concerns regarding the contamination of drinking water and the potential criminal liability of those operating without necessary environmental permits.

Local residents subsequently held protests in Prijedor, alleging that mining activities have damaged private property and degraded air and water quality through high sulfur levels. Tensions have escalated following the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology of Republika Srpska issuing a new environmental permit to the company Drvo-export. This move follows previous rulings by the District Court in Banja Luka and the Supreme Court that had invalidated prior permits and concessions. While protesters claim the company is working across approximately 30 hectares, the new permit covers only 9.15 hectares. Drvo-export maintains it is operating legally and views the protests as an attempt to obstruct an investment of importance to the region.

Recent demonstrations at the Prijedor City Square saw residents demanding the permanent closure of the mine. Protesters reported that mining activities have destroyed water sources and private property over the last three years, with some residents claiming they have been “choked in burning sulfur” due to coal deposits that frequently ignite.
