Overview

Bulgaria has begun enhancing its airspace security following an August 8 incident where a ‘Maya’ decoy drone crashed near the border. In response, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense confirmed the delivery of two anti-drone systems from the American company AXON, which are undergoing integration and deployment.

Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov indicated plans to acquire approximately 10 such systems through the ‘Security Measures for Europe’ (SAFE) mechanism, a project supported by a parliamentary-ratified loan agreement.

In September, Transport Minister Georgi Peev addressed concerns regarding military presence, stating that no allied military aircraft are stationed at Bulgarian airports for combat operations. Peev emphasized the necessity for the state to invest in advanced anti-drone systems with broader capabilities to upgrade existing technological infrastructure.
