Bulgarian election voter turnout issues

Overview

Reports from various regions in Bulgaria indicate significantly low voter turnout during recent elections. In the Stolipinovo ethnic neighborhood of Plovdiv, participation rates were estimated as low as 2% to 4.5% at several polling stations. Residents in this district cited a lack of awareness regarding the election, noting an absence of campaign materials and local agitation.

Similarly, residents in small villages near the Turkish border, including Leyarovo and Stroyno, reported low engagement. In these areas, voters expressed distrust toward politicians and disillusionment with the political process. Other barriers to participation included the transition to machine voting and the physical distance required to reach polling stations.

Recent data from the Varna region shows minimal growth in voter turnout. While the city of Varna saw 16,322 participants, municipal rates remained low. For example, Avren reported nearly 10 percent, Aksakovo slightly over 9 percent, and Byala at 9.46 percent. Other municipalities such as Vetrino, Vulchidol, Suvorovo, Provadia, Dolgopol, and Devnya reported rates between approximately 6 and 9 percent. The lowest recorded activity in the region was in Dolni Chiflik, where 707 people, or 4.54 percent of voters, had cast their ballots.

During a subsequent presidential and vice-presidential runoff, voter turnout in the municipality of Plovdiv reached 28.49% by 19:00. Participation varied by district: the Central district recorded 33.57%, the West district 31.96%, and the South district 30.48%. The East district reported the lowest turnout at 14.94%, creating a gap of over 18 percentage points between the most and least active districts.
