Bulgarian political party election coordination
Overview
Bulgarian political parties are coordinating their positions regarding upcoming judicial appointments and presidential elections.
In late August 2026, GERB representative Toma Bikov indicated that while the party will not nominate its own candidates for the Prosecutor’s Office, it will not offer unconditional support to Progressive Bulgaria candidates. Concurrently, SDS Chairman Iliya Lazarov stated that his party will not field its own presidential candidates but will offer categorical support to a GERB nominee, provided they meet specific requirements. Lazarov noted that the presidency acts as a vital ‘insurance policy’ for the state during international crises.
Following these developments, the Bulgarian Social Democrats announced plans to negotiate with nine presidential candidates for the 2027–2032 mandate. This initiative, decided during a National Committee session, follows the withdrawal of Maria Dobreva from the 2026 presidential race. The party intends to organize discussions with the remaining candidates by early September to report findings to their National Committee.
