Bulgarian regional energy and security cooperation
Overview
Bulgaria is advancing several infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing regional energy security and supply diversification. Energy Minister Iva Petrova reported that investments in the Vertical Gas Corridor are nearing completion, with the Greek connection already operational and the Romanian section expected to be functional by the end of the year. Future capacity increases toward Greece and North Macedonia are anticipated by early next year.
In addition to gas infrastructure, Bulgaria is pursuing initiatives such as the East-West electricity corridor, the Gregy project, and a hydrogen interconnector between Greece and Bulgaria.
On a bilateral level, Bulgarian and Hungarian officials met in Budapest to discuss strengthening cooperation in energy, trade, and connectivity. A primary focus of these discussions was the development of a gas corridor and addressing security challenges regarding stability in Europe and the Black Sea region.
