Bundibugyo Ebola vaccine trials

Overview

Clinical efforts to address the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continue to expand. The outbreak, which has seen infections surpass 4,000 cases, has prompted the WHO and Africa CDC to declare a public-health emergency of international concern.

In Canada, Moderna’s Phase 1 trial for its mRNA-1469 vaccine began on 3 August, with the first participant dosed in Truro, Nova Scotia. The study, which includes sites in Halifax and Toronto, aims to enroll approximately 80 healthy adults to assess safety and immune response. Moderna has committed to providing at least 500,000 doses to low- and middle-income countries at access-pricing if licensed.

In the DRC, NanoViricides has received regulatory approval from the Congolese Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority (ACOREP) to begin Phase 2 trials for its NV-387 treatment, which utilizes an oral gummy formulation.

Furthering vaccine development, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has pledged up to $16.5 million to the African biopharmaceutical company Minapharm Group. This funding will support a vaccine candidate designed by ProBioGen that utilizes the MVA-CR19 modified vaccinia Ankara platform. This candidate is the fifth Bundibugyo-specific vaccine supported by CEPI and is designed to induce both B- and T-cell responses to aim for long-lasting immunity.

While existing vaccines for the Zaire strain may offer some cross-protection, the Bundibugyo strain remains rare and currently lacks approved specific treatments.
