Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom leadership and health crisis

Overview

The Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom is facing internal instability driven by leadership disputes and the declining health of the Omukama, Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I. While the kingdom has attempted to implement training for clan leaders regarding customary guidelines and the protection of vulnerable populations, efforts to secure medical funds for the king’s specialized treatment abroad have been hindered by institutional divisions.

Conflict has intensified between the Babiito ruling clan and Kingdom Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga. Chief Prince Eng. Fred Mugenyi Rucunya has challenged Byakutaga’s tenure, demanding he vacate his office by mid-October 2026, citing concerns over transparency and accountability. Rucunya has specifically contested the authority of the Royal Commission to grant Byakutaga extensions, which had previously been authorized through June 2024.

To prevent unrest and protect the Omukama, employees, and property following intelligence regarding potential youth demonstrations, security forces—including the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and anti-riot police—were deployed to the kingdom’s Hoima premises. These security forces have since vacated the premises.
