Burundi infrastructure and development projects
Overview
Burundi is managing several large scale development initiatives. In the water sector, the PROSECEAU project, which aims to expand water supply to Rumonge and Nyanza, has missed its July 2026 completion deadline. REGIDESO officials reported that source catchment work is 85% complete, with equipment expected to facilitate water capture from Lake Tanganyika by mid-August.
Simultaneously, the government launched the $312 million Integrated Development Project (BRIDEP) to enhance agro-pastoral production in Bujumbura and Gitega. Funded by the Burundian government, the African Development Bank, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the project focuses on rice and maize cultivation, as well as poultry and pig rearing. The initiative intends to benefit 120,000 households through irrigation development, hillside management, and infrastructure improvements to support climate resilience and job creation.
