CaixaBank AI and cyber‑security initiatives
Entities: Gonzalo Gortázar · CaixaBank
Overview
In late July 2026 CaixaBank announced two complementary steps in its digital overhaul. First, it created a dedicated cyber‑security unit within its tech subsidiary, CaixaBank Tech, to embed security from the earliest stages of projects and counter AI‑driven and emerging quantum threats. María Guillamón was named chief information security officer of the unit, working alongside group CISO Alberto Rosa to enforce consistent protection across the bank.
A day later the bank unveiled its €5 billion "Cosmos" plan, a 2025‑2027 roadmap that places artificial intelligence at the core of its transformation. The strategy funds generative‑AI tools, AI‑agent systems and a hiring drive that will grow an AI staff from 500 to 1,000 by 2027. Early deployments include Salesforce Agentforce, handling thousands of digital customer interactions each month.
On 29 July, CEO Gonzalo Gortázar stressed that the AI push will not lead to branch closures or staff reductions. The bank has added about 2,500 employees in the past two years, 80 % of whom are under 35 and primarily in technology and data roles. Website inquiries are now resolved by AI in roughly half of cases, while the technology division has expanded from around 300 to 1,700 specialists. A new mobile app for small‑and‑medium enterprises is also under development, underscoring the bank’s view of technology as a partner to human bankers rather than a replacement.
