Specifically, the California Supreme Court must approve commutations for individuals with multiple felony convictions, which applies to more than half of the relevant cases. Recent reports indicate Governor Newsom is actively reportedly considering a mass commutation of commuting the state’s death sentences of all 563 inmates currently on death row inmates. If implemented, this move would convert sentences to life in prison without parole, potentially marking parole. This potential move, which could be one of his final acts before leaving office in January, follows a botched execution in Tennessee involving Christa Pike.
