California renewable energy infrastructure development
Overview
Renewable energy infrastructure development in California has seen recent progress in both solar generation and energy storage capacity.
In mid-August 2026, Recurrent Energy secured $695 million in financing for the 330 MW Cobalt Solar project in Riverside County. The project, which is currently under construction, is expected to reach commercial operation by late 2027 and power approximately 82,000 homes.
Shortly thereafter, EDP Renewables North America and the Redwood Coast Energy Authority completed the Sandrini Energy Storage project in Kern County. This 92 MW/368 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) is co-located with the 300 MW Sandrini Solar site and is designed to enhance grid reliability by delivering power during peak demand. The facility has the capacity to power more than 22,000 homes and is expected to provide over $21 million in local tax revenue, with more than $5 million designated to support local public services and infrastructure such as schools, roads, and emergency services. The construction phase of the project supported approximately 250 jobs.
