Cameroon-Chad border trade and customs tensions

Overview

Trade and customs tensions have emerged at the border between Cameroon and Chad. In Ngaoundéré, security forces and the HALCOMI IV special mission intercepted a large shipment of undeclared goods, including motorcycles, pharmaceuticals, and mobile phones.

Concurrently, disputes over customs fees have disrupted trade between the two nations. Transport drivers immobilized vehicles for over two weeks in response to what they described as “excessive and unofficial payments” at various checkpoints. This disruption led to fruit shortages in N’Djamena. Although services have recently resumed, tensions persist between transporters, merchants, and customs agents regarding unregulated fees.
