The Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) is engaged in a legal and political dispute with the Cameroonian Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT) regarding the recognition of a party convention held in December 2025. Opposition members have accused the Ministry and Minister Paul Atanga Nji of using administrative tactics to ‘domesticate’ and neutralize the party. Specifically, activists have criticized the government for continuing to recognize certain individuals within the party leadership who had reportedly been expelled. The MRC contends that the Ministry is misapplying Law 90/056 by treating the mandatory submission of party statutes, submitted on January 5, 2026, as a request for authorization rather than a simple notification. In August 2026, the dispute escalated when Minister Paul Atanga Nji formally refused to recognize Maurice Kamto as the president of the MRC, stating in an August 19 letter that the ministry would not acknowledge the results of the December 21, 2025, extraordinary convention that re-elected Kamto. This stance has raised concerns regarding the MRC’s ability to participate in the 2027 legislative and municipal elections. On September 8, 2026, Maurice Kamto resigned as president of the MRC, effective immediately. In a letter to the party board, Kamto cited the ‘superior interest’ of the party, its members, and the ‘People of Change’ as his reasoning. His resignation coincided with that of first vice-president Mamadou Mota, who attributed his departure to ~~regime harassment.~~ ‘constant harassment’ by the administration. Following the announcement, Aboubakary Siddiki, president of the Mouvement Patriotique du Salut Camerounais (MPSC), issued an open letter rejecting the resignation, urging Kamto to stay and stating, ‘You do not have the right to leave the ship because it is pitching.’ Reactions to the leadership vacuum have been mixed.
