Campeche economic diversification and development
Overview
The state of Campeche is pursuing economic diversification to reduce its dependence on the oil industry. This strategy includes a sports tourism initiative scheduled for late 2026, which aims to generate an estimated 27.4 million pesos for local commerce and hospitality.
As the region evolves, the business sector is navigating complex labor dynamics. While Secretary of Economy Jorge Lavalle Maury reported the creation of nearly 7,000 new jobs this year—including a recent monthly increase of over 1,500 positions—business leaders have raised concerns regarding rising labor costs. Martha Reyes Aldana, president of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), noted that total costs for a minimum-wage employee can reach 15,000 pesos per month after accounting for social security, legal benefits, and payroll taxes. To support growth, Reyes Aldana has called for reduced bureaucracy, lower tax burdens, and improved public services, such as water supply, to attract investment in construction and real estate.
Addressing recent employment shifts, Maury clarified that the liquidation of over 300 workers at a maquiladora in Calkiní resulted from a change in investment ownership and the withdrawal of American contracts rather than business failure.
Simultaneously, Campeche is highlighting its natural heritage to bolster ecotourism, specifically noting Isla Arena within the Celestún Biosphere Reserve. However, the region's growing popularity as a tourist and residential destination is contributing to shifts in the cost of living, with rising inflation impacting housing rentals and essential expenses.
