Canada inflation stability and North American rate outlook

Overview

Canada’s annual inflation rate remained stable at 3.0% in August, matching the rate recorded in July. While the increase in gasoline prices slowed to 22.8% compared to 25.7% the previous month, this was offset by rising travel costs—with organized travel surging by 26.1%—and rents.

In a shift from previous trends, the national average asking rent fell 4.8% year-over-year to $2,035 in August, marking the 23rd consecutive month of annual declines and the steepest drop since March 2026. Despite this national decline, specific regions like Langley saw modest monthly increases, and Nova Scotia remains among the most expensive provinces for rentals.

Core inflation measures, including the Bank of Canada’s CPI-trim and CPI-median, remain near the 2% target. This stability has led economists to suggest that interest rates may remain unchanged through 2026.

Regarding broader economic activity, Statistics Canada reported that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, hydrocarbons, oilseed, and grain) rose 0.3% to $93.1 billion in July. This growth was driven by the food and building materials sectors, though the mineral and precious metal industry group experienced a significant decline of 31.4%.
