Canada-U.S. trade and tariff negotiations
Overview
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe initially raised alarms regarding potential United States tariffs, warning that a 50% levy on Canadian goods would severely damage the province’s agriculture, forestry, and manufacturing sectors. Moe called for the Canadian federal government to pursue an aggressive renegotiation of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) to mitigate these economic threats.
By late August, the situation shifted toward optimism following a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump not to impose the 50% tariffs. While Moe noted that existing levies have already impacted industries—citing a Saskatchewan sawmill that suspended operations—he indicated that negotiations are now focused on securing preferred market access and reducing levies on products such as steel, aluminum, lumber, and automobiles. Moe stated that while the previous CUSMA status quo is no longer possible, Canada is working toward a strong trade agreement with the U.S.
As negotiations to finalize a new trade agreement continue, Prime Minister Mark Carney has requested that provincial premiers restore American-made wine, beer, and spirits to store shelves. This request aims to address a grievance from the Trump administration, which has characterized the removal of U.S. alcohol from government-controlled liquor stores as a ‘discriminatory practice.’
While Alberta and Saskatchewan have maintained access to U.S. alcohol, most other provinces implemented bans following previous tariff disputes. Reactions to the potential deal vary; Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston expressed optimism, whereas Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette stated that negotiations are ‘far from over’ and indicated Quebec would decide independently whether to return American products to its SAQ retail outlets.
