Canadian Arctic icebreaker fleet expansion

Efforts to expand and renew the Canadian Coast Guard’s icebreaking capacity have progressed through both immediate chartering and long-term domestic construction initiatives.

In August 2026, the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, an Inuit-led organization, partnered with a St. John’s engineering firm to charter the Finnish polar-class icebreaker Nordica from Arctia. This partnership aims to provide heavy ice-breaking and navigation support in the Canadian Arctic, representing a new model for strengthening northern maritime capability through Inuit-led ventures.

Concurrently, the Canadian government has moved to renew its fleet through the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Davie Shipbuilding secured a contract valued between US $8 billion and US $11.3 billion to build six new Polar Class 3 icebreakers. These vessels are intended to replace aging ships used in the Arctic, the St. Lawrence waterways, the Great Lakes, and Atlantic Canada. Construction on the first vessel is slated to begin in 2027, with deliveries expected throughout the 2030s.
