Canadian Army military restructuring
Overview
The Canadian Army is undergoing a major structural reorganization to prepare for a shifting threat environment and a global return to large-scale combat operations. This transition involves moving from geographically based divisions to those organized by functional purpose.
As part of this change, the 1st Canadian Division is being established at CFB Edmonton to serve as the primary force for crisis response and large-scale combat. This new division will consolidate capabilities such as artillery, engineers, light infantry, paratroopers, and armour. Meanwhile, the 3rd Canadian Division is being retired to the supplementary Order of Battle to allow for potential future reactivation.
Army Commander Lieutenant-General Michael C. Wright described this generational change in a document titled ‘Inflection Point 2025’. However, the success of this restructuring is heavily dependent on the procurement of billions of dollars worth of new equipment.
