Canadian cancer screening and care modernization

Overview

In Canada, advocates and experts are calling for modernized cancer screening and more coordinated care to address gaps in the patient journey. National survey data indicates high public support for a single national standard for breast screening starting at age 40, as well as access to innovative detection technologies. Concerns have been raised that certain national screening guidelines, such as those for prostate cancer, have not been updated in over a decade.

In response to the need for better navigation and early detection, Alberta has launched a new online guide, screeningforlife.ca, to help residents understand screening recommendations for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers. The province is also transitioning toward paperless cancer screening notifications via the MyHealthAlberta MyChart platform.
