Canadian citizen detained and deported after NJ assault

On In July 3, 2024, Canadian national 2024 Kaitlyn (Caitlin) Tracey Tracey, a Canadian visitor, was recorded slapping a teenager wearing a pro‑Trump apparel shirt on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk in New Jersey. She was charged with simple assault, endangering a child’s welfare, harassment and obstruction of justice. After an alleged visa overstay, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took her into custody on July 13, 2024 and placed ICE detained her at the privately run Delaney Hall detention center facility in Newark. A court hearing was set for early August 2024. Tracey’s husband, TikTok creator Matthew Geroni, has claimed the case is politically motivated, posted emotional pleas for her release, and later threatened local officials in a TikTok video, saying “we know where you live.” The Department of Homeland Security labeled her a “Maple Leaf Menace.” In July 2026 Geroni’s threats were reported alongside the ongoing immigration proceedings. Tracey pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault, received a one‑day jail sentence and was ordered deported. A Texas immigration judge approved her removal; she was transferred from Delaney Hall to an ICE processing center in Laredo, Texas, and subsequently deported sent back to Canada. The victim’s family supported the plea agreement, while Tracey’s attorney described her as a productive member of society. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the assault and the need for removal, and the Department of Homeland Security confirmed her illegal status at the time of the incident. The case underscores has drawn online attention, with Tracey’s husband claiming the intersection matter was politicised and alleging threats and doxxing attempts. It illustrates the overlap of criminal prosecution and immigration enforcement in a highly politicised charged political environment.
