Canadian citizen deported after NJ assault
Overview
In July 2024 Kaitlyn Tracey, a Canadian visitor, was recorded slapping a teenager wearing a pro‑Trump shirt on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk in New Jersey. She was charged with simple assault, endangering a child’s welfare, harassment and obstruction of justice. After an alleged visa overstay, ICE detained her at the privately run Delaney Hall facility in Newark.
In July 2026 Tracey pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault, received a one‑day jail sentence and was ordered deported. A Texas immigration judge approved her removal; she was transferred from Delaney Hall to an ICE processing center in Laredo, Texas, and subsequently sent back to Canada. The victim’s family supported the plea agreement, while Tracey’s attorney described her as a productive member of society. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the assault and the need for removal, and the Department of Homeland Security confirmed her illegal status at the time of the incident.
The case has drawn online attention, with Tracey’s husband claiming the matter was politicised and alleging threats and doxxing attempts. It illustrates the overlap of criminal prosecution and immigration enforcement in a highly charged political environment.
