The Canadian government has initiated several funding and policy measures to address homelessness and the housing crisis. Initial efforts included a $125 million investment to extend the Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampments Initiative (UHEI) through 2026, with $45.5 million directed toward ten municipalities in Ontario. Advocates have suggested that a reimagined Canada Housing Benefit could potentially reduce homelessness by 60 per cent. In Winnipeg, tensions have emerged between social service agencies regarding the management of homeless encampments. City councillors have accused the Main Street Project of interfering with efforts by St. Boniface Street Links to transition encampment residents into stable housing, with reports of clashes over outreach strategies and housing placement.
