Canadian food and agricultural trade trends

The Canadian food and agricultural sectors have demonstrated significant economic activity and growth across various product categories.

In the processed fruit and vegetable sector, sales reached USD 8.5 billion in 2025, representing a 6.1% growth rate. This expansion is attributed to domestic demand and a reliance on imported ingredients to meet year-round requirements. The retail segment for these products hit a record USD 2.1 billion, with consumer trends moving toward “clean label” and convenience foods. This sector operates under a complex regulatory framework involving the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Canada Border Services Agency, and Health Canada.

Simultaneously, Canadian exports in other agricultural areas have seen notable increases. Maple syrup exports rose by 17.2% in 2025, reaching 844.2 million CAD, with rising demand from international markets such as the Netherlands, Costa Rica, and Saudi Arabia. In the seafood sector, exports to Vietnam grew from 44 million USD in 2023 to 61 million USD in 2025, with lobster, snow crab, and oysters being key products. These trade flows are supported by the CPTPP agreement, which allows certain seafood products to benefit from 0% import tariffs.
