Canadian West Coast port trade expansion

Overview

British Columbia’s west coast ports are increasingly central to Canada’s strategy to diversify trade toward Indo-Pacific markets. In 2025, the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, and Nanaimo handled a record 200 million metric tonnes of cargo, valued at $409 billion, facilitating nearly half of Canada’s trade with partners outside of North America.

By the first half of 2026, the Port of Vancouver specifically reported record cargo volumes of 88.1 million metric tonnes, a 3% increase over the same period in 2025. This growth was largely driven by record exports of Alberta crude oil and Prairie grain to Indo-Pacific markets, alongside record vehicle imports and cruise operations.

To support long-term goals of doubling exports to non-U.S. markets, infrastructure projects such as the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 are being prepared to increase capacity.
