Cancún municipal leadership transition
Overview
Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández resigned from his position as Secretary General of the Benito Juárez City Council in Cancún to participate in an internal process within the Morena party. He officially registered to seek the Municipal Coordination of the Committees for the Defense of Transformation and National Sovereignty, planning to conduct neighborhood assemblies to strengthen the party’s territorial presence.
Following his resignation, the Cabildo of Benito Juárez appointed Antonio de Jesús Riveroll Ribbón as the new Secretary General. Riveroll Ribbón, formerly the director of Civil Protection, intends to focus on inter-departmental coordination, citizen service, and reviewing municipal regulations to manage the city’s growth.
Gutiérrez Fernández’s registration is part of a broader wave of internal Morena processes occurring across various Mexican states as members prepare for the 2027 elections. This nationwide movement has expanded to include numerous figures across Mexico, such as candidates in Tijuana, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Sinaloa. The party’s national leadership, including Ariadna Montiel, has called for unity and strict adherence to internal rules, which include a requirement for state officials to resign from their current posts to participate in the selection process.
