Cancún municipal social assistance initiatives

Overview

The municipality of Benito Juárez in Cancún has initiated new social assistance and housing programs for vulnerable populations. The city opened the Albergue para Transformar Vidas ‘María Loreto León Beltrán,’ a shelter providing food, hygiene items, and rehabilitation services. This facility aims to reduce the need for individuals to commit minor offenses to secure overnight shelter. Authorities are also considering converting parts of the ‘El Torito’ detention center into a temporary shelter for medical screening and addiction treatment.

Following the opening of the shelter, municipal officials, including the General Secretary of the City Council and the Municipal Institute Against Addiction (IMCA), launched street-level operations. These initiatives focus on providing direct guidance and institutional resources to individuals in vulnerable situations to assist with social reintegration.
