Cantabria regional governance and social investment

Overview

The regional government of Cantabria is addressing various social, economic, and administrative priorities through parliamentary debate and budgetary allocation.

In late September 2026, the Cantabria Parliament scheduled sessions to debate issues including energy policy, the Altamira project, postal services, and education. Specifically, political groups raised concerns regarding the closure of classrooms and the reduction of teaching positions in the public school system for the 2026/27 academic year.

Following these legislative activities, the regional administration announced significant investments focused on social welfare and rural development. To combat depopulation, over 126 million euros have been allocated to foster economic opportunities in rural areas. Furthermore, President María José Sáenz de Buruaga announced a record investment in the dependency care system, with funding for contracted residential and day care stays expected to reach 123 million euros in 2026.

Recent data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates that Cantabria faced economic challenges in 2025, recording a GDP growth of 1.7%. This figure was 0.9 percentage points lower than the Spanish national average of 2.6%, making it the lowest growth rate among all Spanish autonomous communities. Additionally, Cantabria’s GDP per capita of 31,266 euros remains below the national average of 34,237 euros.

In response to these economic conditions, the government has introduced 1.28 million euros in subsidies to improve employability through vocational training and guidance services. A new sociosanitary coordination strategy for 2026-2030 has also been presented to support the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses.
