Cantabrian brown bear population recovery

Overview

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is experiencing a significant population recovery and spatial expansion across the Cantabrian Mountains and the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. After nearing extinction in the late 20th century, the species has reclaimed historical habitats in regions such as Galicia and Asturias.

Research indicates that while the bear’s presence area decreased by 25% during the first two decades of study, it grew by 70% in the most recent decade. This expansion has led to the reconnection of previously isolated subpopulations. As of early 2023, a genetic census recorded approximately 370 individuals.

Despite this success, experts note that current recovery plans only cover about 50% of the species’ current 17,000 square kilometer distribution. This lack of formal protection in half of their territory may increase potential conflicts with crops, livestock, and beekeeping.
