Capcom Street Fighter franchise status

Overview

Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto recently disclosed that the Street Fighter franchise faced a risk of extinction during the Street Fighter V era. Matsumoto noted that the series could have faded into obscurity within a decade due to challenges following the 2016 launch of Street Fighter V, including player criticism regarding missing features and unstable online play, as well as an aging player base.

To ensure long-term sustainability, development teams focused on attracting younger players through new titles. However, Capcom has recently had to suspend online services and sales for Street Fighter V on PlayStation 4 and Steam to address security concerns. The suspension follows reports of vulnerabilities related to the PHP programming language that could potentially allow unauthorized remote code execution. While offline content remains accessible, server-dependent features like ranked matches are currently unavailable.
