Capital punishment proceedings in the southern United States
Overview
In mid-September 2026, several death penalty proceedings occurred across the southern United States. In Texas, LeJames Norman was executed via lethal injection at the Huntsville state penitentiary for a 2005 triple homicide in Edna. Norman had been on death row for nearly 21 years following a robbery attempt in which he and accomplice Ker’Sean Ramey fatally shot Samuel Roberts, Tiffani Peacock, and Celso Lopez.
In Alabama, Jeffery Lee was scheduled for execution via lethal injection following a legal dispute regarding the use of nitrogen gas. In Georgia, a judge issued a stay to halt the scheduled execution of Stacey Humphreys following a late-night legal petition.
Following Norman’s execution, focus shifted to his co-defendant, Ker’Sean Ramey. On Wednesday, September 23, Ramey, 41, was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville penitentiary. His death occurred one week after Norman’s. Ramey had been convicted of capital murder for the August 2005 shootings of Roberts, Peacock, and Lopez during an attempted robbery in Edna.
Prior to his execution, Ramey offered final words praising God and expressing gratitude to his family and fellow death row inmates, whom he called “brothers.” His legal team’s final appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court—which argued that jurors were not informed of his history of poverty and childhood abuse—was rejected. Ramey was the sixth inmate executed in Texas in 2026.
