Cardano launch of CIP-0113 compliance standard

Overview

The Cardano Foundation has launched CIP-0113, a new programmable token standard on the Cardano mainnet. Designed for regulated assets like stablecoins, tokenized bonds, and investment funds, the standard enables issuers to embed compliance rules directly into the logic of native tokens.

Through this framework, the Cardano ledger enforces automated Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) checks, sanctions screening, and transfer restrictions during the minting, burning, or transferring of tokens. It also provides the ability to freeze or seize specific assets to meet legal or regulatory mandates. These processes are handled on-chain rather than through external off-chain servers.

The update was implemented without a hard fork and does not affect the native ADA cryptocurrency or existing tokens. The Swiss Capital Markets and Technology Association (CMTA) has recognized the framework, noting its comparability to the CMTAT certification system for blockchain-based securities.
