Carinthia regional budget and fiscal planning
Overview
The Carinthian state government has outlined a fiscal framework focused on significant savings and debt reduction. The 2027 budget draft projects expenditures of approximately 4.1 billion euros against revenues of 3.725 billion euros, resulting in a net deficit of roughly 383 million euros.
To manage the deficit, the government aims to reduce debt by 1.3 billion euros over the legislative period, exceeding previous targets. Financial strategies include using 430 million euros from a fund related to the Hypo affair to repay old loans and reduce interest costs. Major spending is directed toward health, social affairs, education, and nursing. To achieve these targets, the administration plans to reduce administrative staff by 300 positions by 2031. Governor Daniel Fellner noted that the administration would avoid a “lawnmower” approach to cuts, instead targeting specific areas to protect essential investments.
The budget has faced criticism from opposition parties, such as the Freedomites and Team Kärnten, who warned of high indebtedness and called for cuts to political and administrative costs. The ruling SPÖ and ÖVP parties have defended the plan as necessary for provincial operations.
