Casa Blaquier archaeological excavations in Buenos Aires
Overview
Archaeological excavations at Casa Blaquier in the Monserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires have uncovered significant historical artifacts and structures. The site, located at Defensa 163, was recovered by the City Government of Buenos Aires following approximately forty years of irregular occupation.
Researchers have identified five distinct historical structures, including a six-meter-deep latrine built with mud-bonded bricks, a sewage sink with a brick vault, discard pits, and an unexcavated cistern that still contains water.
Findings include over 4,000 fragments of porcelain, ceramics, glass, and majolica. Notable items recovered include two colonial coins (macuquinas) dated 1743 and 1749, a bone-carved chess piece, kaolin pipes, marbles, beads, and buttons. Animal remains from birds and fish were also found, providing insight into the domestic life and dietary habits of the site’s former residents.
