Catalan sovereignty and political tension

Political discussions regarding Catalan sovereignty and autonomy have transitioned from ideological debates to specific demands for fiscal control and grievances over state conduct.

Initially, political leaders at the Universitat Catalana d'Estudi addressed the future of the Països Catalans. Jordi Turull, Secretary General of Junts, warned that the rise of far-right ideologies poses a threat to the independence movement by promoting exclusion. Other former presidents, including Quim Torra and Cristòfol Soler, emphasized linguistic defense and criticized the Spanish state for fiscal deficits and the centralization of power.

Following these debates, tensions escalated around economic policy and law enforcement. Turull demanded control over financial resources to address an annual fiscal deficit of 22 billion euros, suggesting Junts may propose an alternative economic concert in Congress. Simultaneously, allegations of police misconduct emerged after Club Esportiu Europa accused Spanish officers of disproportionately attacking a supporter for displaying an independentist flag. The Spanish government's delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto, has urged prudence, stating that current information does not align with the club's claims.
