Catalonia lifeguards protest for safety

On 24 July 2026 lifeguards in Barcelona gathered in Plaça de Sant Jaume on World Drowning Prevention Day, demanding more staff, climate‑adjusted work hours and official health‑care recognition after 24 drownings in Catalonia since June, including 13 this summer. They cited a 2023 city‑council agreement that expanded seasonal coverage and called for the same model across the region, warning against the privatisation of rescue services.

Six days later, on 30 July 2026, lifeguards in the Balearic town of Calvià staged a protest outside municipal hall, pressing for expanded patrol hours, access walkways on all eleven beaches and infrastructure in Magaluf and Santa Ponsa, after seven drownings in the previous year. The group scheduled a meeting with officials for 31 July and warned against further delays. The same day, social‑care workers in Lleida marched for better labour conditions, linking the broader Catalan labour unrest to the lifeguards’ safety campaign.
